Japanese Baseball Terms Glossary

To better express the Japanese game, I will use basic Japanese baseball terms from time to time.

Is this necessary? Absolutely.

Many of the terms I list here are used exclusively in the Japanese broadcasts and as you see from the translations, they make perfect sense. I will give a literal translation followed by a description. Here goes:

ゴロ - "roll on the ground" - Any ground ball.

ファインプレイ - "fine play" - Great play in the field.

かっ飛ばせ(かっとばせ) - "send it flying" - A phrase used in conjunction with a player's         name in almost every cheer.

タイムリ - "timely" - Any RBI hit is called a timely hit.

空振り(からぶり)- "empty swing" - Swing and a miss. Used in conjunction with 空振り三 (からぶりさんしん), which is to strike out swinging.

インコース - "in-course" - A pitch on the inside part of the plate.

アウトコース - "out-course" - A pitch on the outside part of the plate.

ゲットツー - "get two" - Double play.

さよなら - "goodbye" - Any walk-off is described by saying さよなら followed by the event (さよならhomerun).

ピンチ - "pinch" - This is the Japanese version of a jam.

ストレート - "straight" - A fastball, the pitcher's most basic pitch.

送りバント(おくりバント)- "bunt to send" - Sacrifice bunt, also called セーフティーバント.

エンドラン - "and run" - Hit and run play.

フォアボール - "four balls" - A walk.

デッドボール - "dead ball" - Unlike America where a dead ball refers to a foul ball as well as a hit batsmen, it only means a hit batsmen in Japan.

ツーベース - "two bases" - A double.

引っ張る(ひっぱる)- "pull" - Pull hitting.

内安打(ないあんだ)- "hit within" - Infield hit.

ファウル - "foul ball"

塁(るい)- "base" Used at the end of either 一、二、三 (first, second, third) to correspond to bases. ex. 二塁=second base.

セ・リーグ and パ・リーグ - "Central League and Pacific League"

チェンジ - "change" - This is what occurs after 3 outs end an inning.

バッテリー - "battery" This is used to talk about the pitcher and catcher at the same time. Carries more importance in Japan.

イージーフライ - "easy fly" - Any routine flyball.
ウイニングショット - "winning shot" - The pitcher's go-to pitch.

あまいボール - "sweet ball" - A pitch in the sweet part of the plate.

雨中(あめちゅう)- "rain delay"

Aクラス - "A-Class" - The top 3 teams in each division.

Terms in English:

Ichigun - top flight of baseball.

Nigun - "minor leagues" of Japanese baseball.

Central League - made up of Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Tokyo Yomiuri Giants, Hiroshima Carp, Chunichi Dragons, Hanshin Tigers, Yokohama Baystars. No DH.

Pacific League - made up of Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, Orix Buffaloes, Saitama Seibu Lions, Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, Chiba Lotte Marines, Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. DH rule in effect.

Climax Series - both leagues play the Climax Series to decide who will play in the Japan Series. The 2nd and 3rd placed regular season teams play each other and the winner faces the regular season winner of their league. The two winners of that series face off in the Japan Series.

Japan Series - World Series of NPB. Best of 7 series between the winner of the Pacific and Central League Climax Series.

This list will be updated now and then.

  1. FWIW a ground ball is also called “un rolling” in Spanish.
